LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Graham Mitchell, who was MOTÖRHEAD’s tour manager in the late 1970s and early ‘80s, was also an avid photography enthusiast. A new large-format tabletop book, Fast & Loose: Snapshots from the Graham Mitchell Archive, 1977-1982, collects nearly 100 of his snapshots, including many that have never been published before. “I somehow knew how important it all was,” Mitchell says. “I knew I needed to capture at least some of those moments. I’d see the band to the stage and then immediately go out into the house, jostle with the punters, and get what I could.”

One of the most influential hard rock bands of all time, MOTÖRHEAD mixed rock, punk, and heavy metal into an aggressive blend of pure explosive energy. During the era documented in Fast & Loose, the classic “three amigos” lineup of the band (Lemmy Kilmister, Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor, and “Fast” Eddie Clarke) toured relentlessly and recorded a half dozen classic albums that continue to impact the music world today. All three of their estates participated and gave their blessing for Fast & Loose.

In the period covered in the photographs, Mitchell was not only the band’s tour manager but, in his own words, “their babysitter, their procurer of women, their procurer of drugs, procurer of everything.” Somehow, in the midst of the whirlwind, when Graham picked up his camera he snapped amazing images of the group that document the raw power of MOTÖRHEAD with an unparalleled intimacy that only a trusted member of the inner circle could capture.

Rather than posed promotional images, these are gritty and off-the-cuff shots that catch the band in the studio, on stage, in rehearsals, partying in dressing rooms, clowning around in the van, and even getting into a shaving cream fight with fans. From side-stage performance shots, to up close images of band gear, to Lemmy wearing a slice of turkey as an eye patch, what’s presented in Fast & Loose is a true insider’s view.

“Most of my images,” Graham reveals, “are one-shot photos, and there’s no flash on any of them. They were done at 400 ASA to speed up the film and take advantage of whatever natural light I could get, so I was always flying by the seat of my pants whenever I clicked the shutter.” Through it all, he managed to capture the harsh realities of the road (band members washing their hair in a tiny sink), the inevitable fun (living it up with members of the band Weapon backstage in Glasgow), and even the tender moments (spending time with Phil Taylor’s dad).

Rather than cleaning and sanitizing the photos, each one is presented with the gritty immediacy of the moment. There are scratches and blemishes, but that’s the point. It preserves an era. “You know, there used to be a MOTÖRHEAD saying,” Graham reflects. “Take no fucking prisoners. It always made sense to me, and I like to think these photos capture that in all its (occasionally grotty but never boring) glory.”

Fast & Loose is an up-close-and-personal look at a one-of-a-kind group that is essential for any diehard fan. Published by BMG, it’s available now in the US, and will be released in the UK on December 30th.

Spirit Crusher magazine ONLY FOR DIE HARDS!!

(English below)

Spirit Crusher “DEATH fan” Magazine in my hands now! Spiritual Healing Edition.

I still remember that Saturday and the heat of late February (summer in Santiago, Chile) when my good friend Marcelo Ramos bought the LP at the mythical Rock Shop record store... so far Death's new album was just a rumor , no one was certain when it would be released and much less no one imagined its front cover... when Marcelo left the store, my friends and me went to see what the art of the new LP was about, a real shock (no skeletons, zombies or leprosy people… It took us a while to realize that what Ed Repka depicted was a crude and brutal reality) After that we convinced him that immediately go to another friend's house to make some "backups" on cassette of that album... a few days later we started to make tape-trade with that recording.

Later in the mailings of Wild Rags Records, Richard (the man behind the Label & fanzine) sent me some flyers of the Death concert with Sadistic Intent (which were signed by WRR) and Devastation, I remember that flyer was stuck for many years in the wall of my room, probably some more years after I left my parents' house.

Today I go back in time to those warm days of March 1990, with all the material that a Die Hard Fan can expect from a Magazine made by a real fan, including an exclusive interview with James Murphy.

Sonidos extremos, recomendados! Extreme sounds, recommended!

(English below)

A small break for a black week, as Joey Jordison, Mike Howe, and Dusty Hill have all passed away, different situations, different lifestyles, the same ending.
At the moment, some music, extreme music that I like, and that has excited me. I’m waiting for their official release next October.
BASTARÐUR, is Aðalbjörn Tryggvason's sideproject, yeah…“Addi” from  SÓLSTAFIR. Extreme sounds linked to Entombed, Napalm Death, Discharge, and Motorhead, a crossover between death metal and crust punk.
Just play on his first single "Viral Tumor" and let the music talk. https://youtu.be/YI8Cf-sO2yU

Ride the Lightning cumple 37 años! Ride the Lightning turns 37!

(English below)

The relentless passage of time, 37 years ago Metallica released Ride the Lightning via Megaforce Records.

This afternoon I was chatting with a friend who resides in California and we remembered our first approaches to that album, later I called my friend Kike with whom we have a story in common with that great album, in my case after having it for a while on a cassette (probably the copy of the copy of the vinyl-cassette transfer) in the summer of 1989 with my good friends Kike and Toño after seeing it in a second-hand record store (specialized in rock and metal) we decided to pool our money and buy it, we contributed equal parts to be able to raise the amount of CL$ 1500.- we agreed that the album would be shared and it would be a week in each house (what level of naivety) in those years we lived really close to each other and spent all our time playing soccer in the street and listening to metal on the Stereo cassette player (a Metal Boombox), our matches are measured in goals or in the time that each side of the cassette lasted, returning to RTL, already by that year we knew that the album had an edition of Megaforce and another of Elektra, our edition was the second one, we also knew of the existence of an edition with a green cover, our album had a really worn cover, but it was what was within our reach - apparently its previous owner gave it a lot of punishment on the turntable- Today the album continues in the circle of friends, it is at Kike's house, who keeps it in the best possible conditions, and it is usual that we give it a listen when we meet the group of teenage friends... some say that  he f**ked up with the money, he says "I refund the money" ...anyway in those meetings it is more fun to say that we never received such money. (at the current exchange rate it is US $ 1.20.-)

My favorite song on the album, hard to say but “Fight fire with fire” and “For whom the bells tolls” are always on my playlists. Over time I have had the opportunity to purchase the album in its physical cassette, CD, and vinyl formats, and they have a prominent place in my record collection. I must admit that it was a pleasant surprise to see the chilean cassette of “RTL” available in our neighborhood record store, a few years after this story.

(Ride the Lightning was certified as a gold album by the RIAA in November 1987, and certified as a 5x platinum album in June 2003, obviously from 2003 until today it must have added a few more)
